When people go to casinos, they often treat it as a holiday, and because they are having a good time and might be drinking and preoccupied with their gambling, they often let their guard down. Because of these conditions, casinos throughout the country are magnets for professional thieves and other such dishonest people.

One of the things to watch out for is bucket snatchers. These thieves will toss a couple of coins to the side opposite of where a player’s bucket of change is sitting. When the player bends over to pick up the stray coins, the thief grabs their bucket of change and runs off, leaving the player with only a handful of quarters. However, most casinos with anything resembling decent security will be able to nab the ne’er do well and return the purloined bucket back to its rightful owner.

However, not all thieves are as crude as the bucket snatchers. 'Railing' is when someone snatches chips from other players’ racks while standing at the craps tables. Craps is particularly vulnerable because there are usually lots of bets and the players can be easily distracted. Railers tend to work in pairs, with one snatching the chips then handing them off to an accomplice, who quickly disappears into the crowd once enough chips have been stolen and/or their patsy finally notices that something’s wrong with their stack. Since craps is a fairly complicated game to follow and even harder to deal, players occasionally forget what bet is theirs and leave paid winners on the felt, which can be easily pocketed by thieves. Players should always keep their eyes on their bets and ask questions if they think they haven’t been paid correctly, or if they suspect that their winnings have been poached. Remember: it always pays to be alert, even when you’re having a good time!
