Once upon a time casino players understood that they needed something more manageable. And then casino chips were invented. But they didn’t look like they do now. They were made from wood, bone, ivory or even paper. So, what was wrong about these chips?
Swindlers. Just imagine. In the end of the game, there were more chips than there were in the beginning. And there were no rebuys. How is it possible? I’ll repeat myself: swindlers. They could bring their own chips. Now – try to come to a casino with your own chips and use them. I don’t think you will ever come there again.
The only one way to sort out this muddle was to manufacture chips with a unique design. And then it has become a kind of art. Chips with flowers (for the first female casino players), with numerals (for the ancestors of nowadays programmers), with animals (for future Greenpeace guys), etc. were implemented. Main thing about these chips is that they were unique.
In 1930 there were already 1000 designs. The most famous chips were “Crest&Seal” by U.S. Playing Card co. (1097-1939). Then in 1940 the Burt Co. began to make “Crest&Seal” again. They closed in 1985.
These chips were made mostly from clay with engravings. As you guess, these chips were very expensive. And in 1940 appeared the first plastic chips: more wearproof, more cheap. Though they were not so beautiful, almost everyone could buy them.
Today you can find a vide variety of casino chips for reasonable prices. What’s the difference between them? Here are the main types:
1. Clay casino chips
Made of clay composite material. Used both in home games and professional tournaments. You will be surprised to discover that usually casino chips are 9 grams in weight. Like your soul. Sell your soul – buy a casino chip. Good slogan for one who sells chips.
2. Composite casino chips.
Here you’ll see a vide variety of weights: 4 grams, 5 grams… up to 11.5 grams (ABS composite chips). They consist of different materials composed with each other – for example, clay and metal or any other combination to make them really cool.
