First chips appeared with the poker itself coins, gold nuggets, gold dust and money were on the board since the very beginning. Many accidents happened when the players totally lost control over themselves and killed the opponents in a bout of greed. Thats why the plain chips were implemented to prevent and reduce the murders. These first chips were different by source wooden, ivory, bone, paper, clay and shellac. Yeah, surely, it was an innovation, but it caused additional problems. Some skinners tried to add usually successfully their own chips to the pot, so by the end of the game it appeared that there is a double quantity of the chips on the table.
The solution was easy. Manufacturers implemented the design to distinguish one kind of chips from another. Chips were engraved with the images, others used paste-on stickers, and third kind had embossed or inlaid design.
The ivory chips were the most expensive among others. They were hand-engraved and used different things to commemorate on themselves flowers, animals, symbols, geometric figures, suits and so on. They were made especially for the customer who wanted to be unique and thus have unique chips. And they acted brilliantly.
Clay chips were much cheaper and could compete with the ivory ones that is what they actually did. They had multiple design variations too and were different by color.
The last and the modern ones were implemented in the 1940s and used plastic as a material. They are long-lasting, damage-proof, water-resistant, diecast, have many designs and are easy to produce and cheap to buy. They enable realization of any whim so you can combine the chips with the table and your suit or dress.
There are multiple chips for a pro, for a newbie, for a rich and powerful and for the middle-class or poor. Choose the type you want to use and enjoy!
