When discussing the origin of games, there is a common thread through nearly every instance: a dispute as to where the game was first invented. Baccarat is no different in this respect, as there is a dispute as to whether the game was first invented in Italy or France, although most researchers believe the origin of the game is Italian. The term “Baccarat” means ‘zero’ in both French and Italian.
Baccarat is said to have originated from a game played with tarot cards in the late 15th century. The game was somehow brought to France where different variations were adopted by the nobility. This caused a split in the game, with one variation being known as ‘European baccarat,’ and the other variation known as ‘chemin de fer,’ which is very similar to the American game of baccarat played in casinos today. The game known as ‘American Baccarat’ began in England, and eventually migrated to South America. The actual version of baccarat played in American casinos today came from the Capri Casino in Havana, Cuba.
Baccarat was introduced to the casinos during the 1950s, first at the Dunes casino, but soon spreading like a wildfire. In an attempt to keep the “refined” style of the baccarat game, the playing area was often separated. The game of baccarat is often roped off from the rest of the casino area, and at times even guarded. Only the classiest players dare to play the game, and the stakes are often very high although the game is not one of the more challenging.
