Like most games, blackjack originated from a variety of sources. Blackjack itself was derived from other games such as seven-and-a-half, baccarat, and most commonly acknowledged, the game known to the French as vingt-et-un, or 21 to Americans. The game of blackjack is commonly accepted as beginning in France and being brought to America by French colonials. From that point the game would be continuously reshaped into the game that is played today as “blackjack.”

“21” was one of the first games available at casinos, and had less-than-stellar success. In order to sweeten the deal, so to speak, the casinos offered a special during play. Any hand that included both the Ace of Spades as well as one of the black jacks (either the Ace of Spades or the Ace of Clubs) earned 10-to-1 odds on the players bet.

The game of blackjack changed significantly in the 1950s due to a paper by Roger Baldwin entitled “The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack.” After this and another paper in the 1960s that elaborated the strategies of card counting, the 10-to-1 rule was abolished, and casinos applied “house rules” to games to avoid losing money.

The game’s popularity decreased sharply, and eventually the house rules were abolished under the thought process that card-counting is extremely difficult, and most people will not take the time to master the skill.

Counting cards is not only difficult to master, but may also result in getting a person removed from the casino. You are gambling on private property, and if you start to take too much money, there’s nothing saying that the house can’t have you removed from the premises.
