The game of Craps doesn’t sounds like the most attractive game to play, but according to some historians, people have been playing some form of this dice game for over two-thousand years.
Some believe the game originated from the soldiers of the Roman legion rolling shaped pig-knuckle bones onto their shields. Still others claim that the game was invented by the English during the time of the crusades, near a castle named Hazarth. Regardless of the origin, the most common precursor to craps is a game known as ‘Hazard.’
Hazard was an incredibly popular game in England, often played in extravagant houses built for gaming, predecessors of the modern casino, and eventually found its way to France as well. The term ‘craps’ is thought to be a rough translation of the term ‘crabs,’ which is French for a roll of two, otherwise known as “snake eyes.”
Bernard de Mandeville simplified the game in 1813, and John H. Winn altered the rules in order to make the game less prone to loaded dice. Craps has been a popular game over the years, and was a staple of the trench combatants in World War II. Craps was most popular as a riverboat gambling game, yet was fairly popular in casinos until slots and video poker began to experience a boost in popularity. Craps is making a comeback, however, and in terms of the amount of money wagered, it is the biggest gambling game of any sort in the history of the world.
