Roulette is the oldest casino game played today. The word “roulette” can be translated to “small wheel.” The exact origin of the game of roulette is a mystery, with different theories coming and going at an almost constant rate. The origins of the game are thought to be ancient Rome, where games were often played with various wheels, generally taken from wagons. Others claim that the game originated from an old Chinese game where a magic cube of ‘666’ was formed with 37 animal statuettes. The game’s creation is often credited to French-Dominican monks, who were said to have created the game in order to escape the boredom of their daily routine.
The game of roulette as we know it today, however, is often attributed to the famous 17th century mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal. Pascal introduced a very primitive form of the roulette machine, which was a byproduct of his attempts to invent a perpetual motion machine.
The modern version of the roulette wheel was invented in 1842 by Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blake. This was a single ‘0’ roulette wheel, which was introduced in America but was rejected in favor of the double ‘00’ wheel, otherwise known as the ‘American’ wheel. The single ‘0’ wheel was more favored in Europe, and has been dubbed the ‘French’ wheel.
Roulette is still one of the most popular casino games to date, and no matter what stories are lost in it’s past, the future of roulette seems to be full of success.
